Below are instructions on how you can restore a backup from the Staq dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>Before we go through the instructions on restoring a backup, all backup entries display the date and time in UTC timezone format. If you do not want to convert UTC timezone to your local timezone, it is recommended that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/knowledgebase\/changing-the-time-throughout-staq-dashboard\">change your timezone.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Backups &#8211; General<\/h2>\n<p>Firstly, go to the website&#8217;s Staq Panel in question and click Backups:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Staq-Panel-Backups.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Staq-Panel-Backups.png 579w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Staq-Panel-Backups-300x232.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When restoring a backup, Staq will only restore the backup separately for the following files:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>plugins<\/li>\n<li>themes<\/li>\n<li>content<\/li>\n<li>database<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Inside the Staq dashboard, under Data, it clearly labels the type of backup.\u00a0Inside the Type column tells you if it&#8217;s a full or incremental backup:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-list.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1173\" height=\"1122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-list.png 1173w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-list-300x287.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-list-1024x979.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-list-768x735.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1173px) 100vw, 1173px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before restoring, you need to understand if you need to restore a full backup or a partial (incremental) backup.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Incremental Backups<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Incremental Backups means that it has detected a slight file change and rather backing up the full theme for example, it only backs up the recent change.<\/p>\n<p>If you restore that backup, it is removing that file for example.<\/p>\n<h3>Full Backups<\/h3>\n<p>As the name suggests, it&#8217;s a full restore.<\/p>\n<h2>Restore Backup Instructions<\/h2>\n<p>Find the desired backup file to restore. Click Restore.<\/p>\n<p>A popup will open and it will ask you what you wish to restore by selecting 1 or multiple:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Restore-Select.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Restore-Select.png 599w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Restore-Select-300x241.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By clicking\u00a0<strong>Restore<\/strong>, the process will run.<\/p>\n<h2>Restoring plugin or theme backup after plugin updates failed<\/h2>\n<p>If your website crashes after updating plugins\u2014whether through a third-party plugin update management tool or directly via the WordPress dashboard\u2014this often happens because a plugin update caused a PHP error, resulting in a critical error that blocks access to both the frontend and backend of the site. To regain access, follow this guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/knowledgebase\/i-cannot-access-the-backend-of-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recovering access to the WordPress backend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, if you&#8217;d like to debug the issue to regain access, refer to our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/knowledgebase\/how-to-use-staq-debug-for-troubleshooting-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using Staq Debug for troubleshooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those who prefer to restore a backup,\u00a0<strong>please note that you do not need to do a full backup restore<\/strong>. Instead, if it was a plugin update that caused the issue, you can restore a plugin backup only. To do so, identify which plugin update you wish to restore i.e. the last one or a previous version, followed by clicking the triple dots and clicking <strong>Restore<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-plugin-list.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1189\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-plugin-list.png 1189w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-plugin-list-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-plugin-list-1024x456.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/backup-plugin-list-768x342.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1189px) 100vw, 1189px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then a popup will open. Select i.e. Plugins followed by <strong>Restore<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37119\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/restore-plugin-backup.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/restore-plugin-backup.png 649w, https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/restore-plugin-backup-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To avoid such scenarios in the future, consider enabling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpstaq.com\/knowledgebase\/wordpress-automatic-plugin-updater\/\"><strong>Staq Automatic Plugin Updates<\/strong><\/a>. This feature ensures plugins are updated safely, and if a plugin update fails or causes a site issue, the system will automatically roll back to the previous version, leveraging built-in regression testing to maintain stability.<\/p>\n<h2>Error establishing a database connection after database restore<\/h2>\n<p>While rare to see, the database may be corrupted. If this occurs, try a different backup to see if that resolves the issue. Alternatively, perhaps the wp-config.php file was altered which changed the location of the database.<\/p>\n<p>If in doubt, please contact our support team.<\/p>\n<h2>Restoring a deleted website<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve deleted a website in Staq within the last 14 days, we likely still have the backup files. Please reach out to our support team to request the restoration of your website.<\/p>\n<p>If you have your own backup file, simply upload it to Google Drive or Dropbox and share it with our support team.
