🏷️ About the Brand

CONNETIX is a globally loved educational toy brand, known for its magnetic tiles that spark creativity and learning through play. Adored by families, educators, and gift-givers around the world, their toys are stocked in homes and classrooms across Australia, the US, Europe, and Asia.

Their beautifully crafted WordPress + WooCommerce site powers both their retail and wholesale operations, serving customers around the globe year-round.

⚠️ The Challenge

For 11 months of the year, their website runs at a steady, resource-intensive pace — managing orders, shipping, wholesale pricing, and multi-region content.

But for 1 month of the year, all that changes.

Their flagship annual sale drives a surge in traffic up to 100x normal levels. It’s the biggest event of their calendar — and it had a history of crashing their site.

🚫 Previous Hosting Pain (on Kinsta)

  • Even on Kinsta’s largest plan, the site crashed during sale events.

  • Despite caching, every visitor triggered dynamic requests, bypassing the cache.

  • Their site adjusted prices and shipping dynamically based on the visitor’s location, which meant the server re-generated each page per visitor, leading to overload.

  • During the sales event they can have 5,000+ concurrent PHP users active which would break the site — costing sales, trust, and sanity.

🔍 The Staq Solution

We performed a full performance audit and found the issue: the dynamic currency and location detection logic was preventing effective caching.

✅ Our Approach:

  • We implemented a dynamic caching layer using Staq Cache.

  • With a simple but effective script, we detected each visitor’s location (via IP or cookie) and cached a page specific to their country and currency.

  • This allowed the site to serve cached pages instead of re-rendering dynamically each time, even during massive traffic spikes.

🚀 Instant Results:

  • Visitors still saw their local currency (e.g. AUD, USD, EUR), but the site no longer needed to generate the page each time.

  • Performance soared. Crashes stopped.

  • The team could finally run sale events without technical stress.

⚙️ Smart, Flexible Scaling

Since Staq’s architecture is decoupled, we were able to:

  • Scale the environment up to 100x capacity in under 45 seconds.

  • Adjust server/database resources throughout the sale.

  • Scale down instantly when traffic cooled, optimizing infrastructure costs.

This gave CONNETIX complete flexibility — scaling up for influencers and sales peaks, scaling down when demand dropped.

💡 Business Impact

  • 100% uptime during sale events (compared to yearly crashes on Kinsta).

  • Website now serves global content dynamically without performance hits.

  • Fast page loads across all regions, even during the busiest campaigns.

  • Fewer support tickets. Less stress. More time for marketing and fulfillment.

💬 Client Feedback

“Thanks for your efforts, this is the first time we’ve run a sale that hasn’t resulted in me in the foetal position under my desk!”

“Feedback from everyone in the business was that the website performance… was faultless and that is largely attributed to the work you and your team have done in the lead up to, and during the sale.”
