How to setup SMTP?

On this page

PHP mailers are completely disabled so you will need to use an SMTP plugin like WP Mail SMTP with a connected SMTP service like SendGrid or MailGun. For the Pro plugin, see WP Mail SMTP Pro.

Since PHP mailers are disabled, we recommend setting up Global SMTP because if you forget to apply an SMTP on a particular website, it uses Global SMTP as the fallback solution.

Install WP Mail SMTP as a Global SMTP

You can set one SMTP service for the whole account, so current and future websites send WordPress mail through it.

If you wish to use Staq’s managed SMTP service, these steps below install WP Mail SMTP.

    Inside the Staq dashboard:

    1. Go to Global Plugins.
    2. If WP Mail SMTP is not listed, click Add Plugin and upload the plugin.
    3. Turn on Must Install if you want the WP Mail SMTP plugin to be the primary SMTP plugin. New and existing websites get the plugin.

Must Install on for WP Mail SMTP in Global Plugins

Set the account mail server for Global SMTP

    1. Go to Global Settings.
    2. Stay on Website Defaults.
    3. Click SMTP.
    4. Turn on Enable Global SMTP.
    5. Open SMTP server. Enter Host, Encryption, Port, Username, and Password. TLS uses 587. SSL uses 465. SMTP authentication sends the username and password. Auto TLS upgrades the connection when the server supports it.
    6. Open Mail defaults. Enter From email and From name. Force from email and Force from name replace a From address set by a plugin or theme. Match return-path sets the return-path to the From email.
    7. Click Save Changes.
    8. In WordPress, open WP Mail SMTP and send a test email.

The License key for WP Mail SMTP Pro is on this same page, under WP Mail SMTP Pro. See WP Mail SMTP Pro.

    Override one website

If you wish for the website owner to receive an email from their own website’s domain, then do not use Global SMTP or override the Global SMTP.
    1. Open the website in Staq Panel.
    2. Click Domains, then SMTP.
    3. Pick SendGrid, Custom SMTP, Global SMTP, or None.
    4. Click Save Changes.

SendGrid uses the connected account. See SendGrid. Custom SMTP here is that website’s own mail server. It is not Clients → Custom SMTP.

SMTP method choices for one website

If you prefer not to used Staq’s managed SMTP service but rather using your own SMTP plugin and settings, select None.

    FAQ

Is this Clients → Custom SMTP?

No. Clients → Custom SMTP sends invoices and reports. This page is WordPress mail for websites.

Where do I put a Pro license?

On Global Settings → SMTP, under WP Mail SMTP Pro. See WP Mail SMTP Pro.

Do I have to use WP Mail SMTP and/or SendGrid?

We support both WP Mail SMTP and SendGrid as a managed solution. But you do not have to use either of them. You can use Global SMTP since it uses the WP Mail SMTP plugin but you can insert any SMTP service provider like MailGun. We do not support MailGun integration but if you have MailGun details, you will just need to enter it manually per site inside Custom SMTP, assuming you’re using WP Mail SMTP plugin. If you’re not using WP Mail SMTP, you can manage it via the plugin inside the WordPress site per site.
