How to Resolve “A User with the Specified Email Already Exists” Error

On this page

When attempting to add a new user to your account, you may encounter the error message:

A user with the specified email already exists.

This guide explains why this error occurs and provides a workaround to resolve it.

    Understanding the Issue

The error occurs because the email address you are trying to add is already associated with the Clients list. Specifically, it is being used as the recipient for invoices or other client-related services.

Currently, the user management system operates with two independent services:

    • Clients > Clients List: Manages email addresses for client billing and services.
    • Users: Manages access to the Staq platform and user roles.

Due to this separation, an email address already in use under Clients cannot be added as a user in the Users section, leading to this conflict.

    Workaround

While we are working on improving the user management system to support shared email addresses, you can use the following workaround to bypass the issue:

    1. Modify the email address in the Clients > Clients List by amending the existing email address by adding a “+” symbol before the “@” symbol. For example:
      • Original email: info@example.com
      • Modified email: info+staq@example.com
    2. Go to Users and add the user with their email address.
    3. Emails sent to the modified address will still be delivered to the original email address.

    Conclusion

This workaround ensures that you can add users to the system without conflicts. If you encounter further issues or have feedback, please reach out to our support team. We appreciate your patience as we work to enhance the user management experience on Staq.
